For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, said Moses. Good to remember! We have the one true God who is close! James tells us to be doers, not hearers in the 2nd Reading. Sometimes, we hear the word of God or feel the call to act and…we don’t. We probably have reasons, too. How can we be witnesses for the love of God if we don’t act? In the Gospel of Mark Chapter 7, we hear the Pharisees questioning why the disciples, followers of Jesus, are not following tradition. Jesus seems to say that if you are just doing something because it looks good, or right to everyone, you are missing the point. He questions what is in your heart. Love conquers all. Eventually if you don’t have a good and loving heart, following the law or doing the good deed, isn’t enough. You are righteous or right with God if you live in love. A change of heart is required for spiritual growth. Prayer or conversation with God is the antidote for a hardened heart. Search for the song, “We Have Been Told” by David Haas. As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. This is our mission.
