Walking in Faith: Your Anchor in Challenging Times

Do you feel like you are being tossed in waves that could sink your boat? Life has dealt me more than one challenge. Staying positive and encouraging through the storms of life is difficult. One thing that has helped me is to stop, breath and sit. I’m not really in a boat during a terrible storm. I am here in my chair, writing my thoughts and processing my emotions or fears.

Anchored. I imagine a boat that is sitting off shore with it’s anchor lowered. I can get off the boat and go ashore. The anchor will keep the boat safe for my return. It won’t float away into the sea. If you have ever gone fishing, you sit there in a spot waiting for the fish to bite your hook. You are anchored in place so you can fish. How can I stay anchored to Christ?

Christ can keep me steady and on track. I thought of the Hebrew word, halakhah, which means to walk in the way. In the Torah, it meant to follow the 613 laws. We are called to live a certain way. Jewish commentary explained that in order to walk in the way, someone had to go before us! Early Christians were called ‘Followers of the Way’ in Acts. Jesus told us that he is the Way, the Truth and the Life. (John 14:16)

These analogies or images of Christ and how I can remain steady and steadfast in my mission help me. This year, we journey in the boat with Christ as our anchor. I like the idea of a safe harbor and peace. No stress or worries about navigation or storms. I can rest, anchored in Christ.

I am anchored in hope, faith and trust. I am also grateful for everyone that gets in the boat with me! I am not alone on this journey. In Hebrews 6:18-19, we read that God has made us a promise and He doesn’t lie. Reading Scripture stories and looking for the miracles in our own lives fosters hope and trust. Knowing what God has done for us is our evidence that God is faithful. Life is not perfect. We just need to walk in the way and in faith. It’s a way of life.

How will you stay anchored in Christ? How can you help your friends or family stay anchored in Christ?
